Hi Chad, thanks for commenting. Yes, you do sometimes have to just get out there and beat the street, although for local businesses it may not always be useful to appear near the top of the organic listings – often they will be better served by appearing at the top of the Local Listings, for which the algorithm is different than organic SEO.
When I first started work, here in Israel we had no local listings and didn’t even appear on Google maps, so it was irrelevant at the time. For you in Canada it makes more sense to focus on local as well as organic.
(BTW, I assume you meant in your last sentence “… most SEO consultants have NO experience with PPC …” ??)

Thanks for your tips! I am wondering if you sometimes have to get out there and beat the street in order to get your first few clients. What I mean by this is actually going out to local businesses that you wish to target and introduce yourself. I know the amount of leads generated this way can be hit and miss but I find that advertising with Adwords extremely expensive as most SEO consultants have experience with PPC advertising.
